Going Greener for Musicians

Joyce (Earth Mama®) Rouse checking Magnificent Healing Cd's from new energy efficient manufacturing process.

There is a revolution happening in every facet of life. Some people call it the “New Green Economy,” or “Sustainability”. Others refer to it as “The Race to Save the Planet.” Whatever phrase on behalf of Earth’s best interest you choose, its clear that in the music world as in any segment of life, culture or work, we have vast choices every day. Often we are so used to doing something one way that we don’t see the growing number of healthier choices available.

If you can hit the record button on Garage Band, you can release a CD. But did you know that you can eliminate the shrink wrap and the jewel case with a variety of recycled paper packaging choices? And that you can request all soy-based ink, which is not made from petroleum?

Many printers will not mention the choice of recycled paper unless you ask for it, but you and your PR team can build a beautiful promo package using gorgeous 100 percent recycled paper stock for every piece. Look for a printer who is certified to use Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper. They will include a small logo of FSC on your print piece so that your savvy listeners will know that you are caring for the planet as you make great music!

  2. Earth Mama,

Many of us our looking for charities to give Earth Day gifts. Do you have any recommendations?

Also, through your work you inevitably encounter resistance. In anger, I've tended to lash out against ignorant individuals who not only disagree with environmentalists (that in itself would be fine) but find it fun to deliberately provoke us with anti-earth activities like contests to see who can run up the largest energy bill, eat the most meat, or dump the most trash. To harm the earth out of ignorance is one thing, to do so in defiance, is another. How do you keep your calm in the face of such people?

    I'd really honor your advice.

  3. Allan,
Great question and comment. The best answer for keeping calm is making sure that I am centered and remember to respond with knowledge and love, not out of anger—but I'm not always not always that centered... I recently experienced an inspiring model:
2 weeks ago I was at a small, stellar conference where Vandana Shiva and her sister, noted public health physician, Mira Shiva, were speaking.

They generously stayed the entire conference, presenting multiple times with stories of helping mitigate environmental abuse in India and worldwide, including water privatization, GMO seed devastation, and experiencing massive number of suicides by Indian farmers, etc.
Yet, she was full of joy and radiated encouragement, peace and serenity. I asked her how she can remain so and she replied, "How can I NOT be so when I am surrounded by those working so hard every day to heal the Earth?" (or something like that)
SO, making sure we spend time with those who are taking positive actions, not just complaining is helpful. As is caring for myself so I don't get too burnt out. Attitude is everything.
If you have not read any of Vandana Shiva's work, please check it out. "Stolen Harvest" "Water Wars" and more

    Blessings and best to you.
    Joyce
